UAB Solar House
- Brand Identity
- Signage
Built as part of the Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon, UAB’s Solar House and Sustainable Community represents the model for net-zero living in an urban area. The Solar House is a one-of-a-kind energy island, powered by a remote microgrid on site and made to withstand the challenges of our local southern environment.
Building sustainable communities, block by block
UAB partnered with Scout to create a stand-out identity and signage system that showcases the individual components that enable the property to produce more energy than it uses. The resulting icon system is a reminder that living sustainably doesn’t have to be complicated, and that building blocks for the future are already in place.
Designed to welcome both visitors and passersby, the signage encourages exploration and illustrates the role of property features. With sustainability at the forefront, each sign was made using recycled and environmentally friendly materials.
It was important that our design for the Solar House maintain its impact across different mediums even as the icons were broken up and used on their own.
